Bio |
Cordell, Richard Charles 78, died peacefully on October 30, 2023, in his home in Palm Desert, California after a 20-year journey with Parkinson's disease........ Richard graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1963 and earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota in 1968......... After attaining his engineering license, he started Cordell Engineering in 1974, which he ran for the rest of his career.............. Richard worked on numerous high-profile engineering projects, including many bridges and skyways throughout the Twin Cities as well as buildings at St. Olaf College in Northfield and the Minnesota Zoo..... He also designed his and his wife Cheryl (Sherry)'s home in Maple Grove as well as the family summer home on Lake Ida in Alexandria. .............Richard and Sherry lived in Minnesota until 2004, when they moved to California to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Richard was a gifted athlete, excelling at any sport he tried and making it look easy. He enjoyed baseball, hockey, downhill skiing and competitive ski jumping in his younger years, and tennis and golf until he was no longer able........... A member of the U.S. National Junior Ski Jumping Team, he jumped often at Theodore Wirth Regional Park and all around the U.S............ He was also a ranked amateur tennis player and a scratch golfer.......... Richard shared his love of sports with his son, Chris, and coached Chris's teams for many years.........He also enjoyed playing the piano and was a voracious reader, both passions he passed on to his daughter, Kelly. Richard was generous with his time and money, a good listener, and always willing to help a family member or friend. He was a social person, although quiet, possessing a dry wit that surfaced via unexpected and hilarious one-liners........... He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him................ Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sherry (Comer); son Chris; daughter Kelly Frey; grandchildren Christian and Cameryn; sisters Karen, Mary (Pat Johnson), and Laura Proctor; and nieces and nephews.................... Preceded in death by his father Robert, mother Evelyn (Raymond), and grandson Cody Frey............ A private Celebration of Life will be held in the Twin Cities in early 2024............. Memorials preferred to the Parkinson's Foundation.......
